WHERE DO WE GET OUR NAME?

HOW DO WE GET OUR NAME!

Here at Rosie’s Roofing and Restoration, we are firm supporters of women’s rights and female empowerment. That is why we chose the iconic Rosie the Riveter as the inspiration for our company name. The construction business has been dominated by men throughout history, and while we employ both men and women in our company, we take inspiration from Rosie and what she has accomplished for our country.

A Bit of History

The image of Rosie the Riveter was first introduced to the world during World War II. During this time, many of the men of working age had been deployed to serve in the war overseas. This left many factories and other industrial employers without the workers they needed. Rather than sitting at home complaining, the women of our country stepped up to fill in for their husbands, brothers, sons and male friends.

A press photographer captured an image of a young woman working in a factory at the Alameda Naval Station, complete with a coverall jumpsuit and polka-dot bandana. This image served as the inspiration for the propaganda images that were soon to be everywhere across the country, encouraging more women to join the workforce to support their men who were off fighting the war. For decades, Geraldine Hoff Doyle was widely believed to be the woman in the photo, but in 2015, an original printing of the image with its caption revealed her to actually be Naomi Parker Fraley.

A Fond Farewell

Fraley passed away on January 20 of this year, at the ripe old age of 96. Her surviving family members remember her as a caring, compassionate woman who always had time for her family. Although she was only recognized recently as the inspiration behind Rosie the Riveter, her iconic image is forever embedded in the American consciousness and will likely live on well into the future. Fraley was glad to finally be recognized, not for fame and fortune, but merely to set the record straight. She was but one of many women who rose to the challenges of living in a time of war, and her legacy helps us to remember all of those who contributed.
