Every home needs maintenance. As you look around for your next project, have you taken a closer look at your home’s siding? Often overlooked, aging and deteriorating siding can give even the best-kept home a worn and tired look. Bring the exterior of the entire property back to life with a siding upgrade!

How Long Does Siding Last?

Meant to last for decades, the lifespan of your siding depends on the type of material it is made from and how well it has been maintained. For instance, while vinyl siding is designed to last 60-100 years, it can become warped, cracked and faded in less than 30 years under certain circumstances. To give you a better idea of how long certain types of siding are meant to last, we’ve compiled this list:

  • Wood. Who doesn’t like the elegant look of traditional wood siding? It is rich and sophisticated, offering a more natural appeal to the home. The problem is, natural wood is very susceptible to moisture and insects and requires a lot of proactive maintenance. Designed to last 20-40 years under the best circumstances, it can begin to look rather shabby in about ten if not taken care of properly.
  • Aluminum. While the metal of this kind of siding can last for decades, it usually begins to fade in about 15 years. To keep it looking fresh, it will need to be painted every few years. Another problem with aluminum siding — it often becomes pitted and dented over time. This may require replacement after about 20 years or so.
  • Vinyl. The longest-lasting and easiest siding material to care for is vinyl. Offering the traditional look of wood, without the work and hassle, vinyl siding is virtually maintenance free. Lasting more than 60 years if cared for properly, it doesn’t dent, scratch or pit and handles almost any weather conditions well. Depending on the color chosen, fading has been reported after 20-30 years.

Once you know how long your exterior siding should last, figuring out when to replace it is much easier. Still, there are a few other reasons why you may need to consider replacing siding before its lifespan is complete.

WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPLACE MY SIDING?

Damage

From storm damage, flooding or even an accident, sometimes your house’s siding needs to be replaced even though it still looks good. For instance, if that teenage driver backs into the corner of the house, ripping through the siding, you may find it necessary to replace it all (especially vinyl), if you are unable to match the original.

If you have wood siding, insects can sometimes make so much damage on the inside, the homeowner must consider replacing it with a new product.

Resale

You may love the retro look of that 70’s aluminum siding. However, if you are planning to sell your home anytime soon, you may want to consider upgrading to a more energy efficient and stylish vinyl siding instead. Many home buyers shy away from older sizing both because of the work involved in maintaining it and the dated look.

Style

With modern siding materials lasting longer and longer these days, sometimes the decision to replace a home’s exterior coverage is simply based on modern trends and styles. Colors that were popular 20 years ago may look outdated now. If your home looks older and more worn than it should, it may be time to consider replacing that dated siding with a more modern look.
